Portrait of a Learner – Goodness

Goodness

A Trinity learner will also be devoted to the formation of character through the practice of virtue. Trinity learners channel reason to hold sway over their passions; they take seriously the law of God written on the heart and make every effort to do the right thing. Reason without a moral compass is dangerous; and morality without reference to God is ultimately a vain quest. Trinity’s goal is for students to cultivate virtue as an expression of their life in Christ, but goodness is a goal for all of our students, regardless of their faith.

Students educated well in this tradition will tell the truth even when it hurts; stand against the mocking crowd; give to each what is owed; seek moderation in all things; take care of their parents in their infirmities; pay their debts and save; give generously to worthy causes; volunteer their time without stint; and do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with their God.

Seeks wisdom

  • Understands that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom
  • Attends to both the means and the ends of a problem or challenge
  • Makes peace with others and collaborates
  • Lives humbly

Does justice

  • Decides fairly, guarding against bias
  • Does the right thing even when sacrifice is required
  • Does unto others as they would have others do to them
  • Works to undo injustice
  • Is honest, even when others are not looking on
  • Shows empathy and mercy to others, as one who has received mercy

Exercises self-control

  • Waits patiently
  • Treats others with gentleness
  • Acts as though one’s body belongs to God
  • Gives generously

Practices courage

  • Dares to face fears with faith
  • Stands up for those on the outside, at the margins
  • Falls and fails, but gets back up and tries again
